Older adult substance misuse often goes undetected. As the proportion of individuals over 65 in the US population is growing, and rates of alcohol, marijuana, and prescription drug use are increasing in this age group, it is critical that more be done to identify substance misuse and abuse in older adult populations. SBIRT Colorado examined screening data from adults aged 50 and older and found the following risk factors for positive alcohol, marijuana or illicit drug screens: younger age group (aged 50 to 64); male gender; Black race; and emergency care setting. Furthermore, just under half of older adults who screened positive for marijuana used it daily. Read more here.
