On an average day, 3,900 people initiate nonmedical use of prescription opioids in the US and 580 initiate heroin use, with the numbers growing at an alarming rate. SBIRT Colorado screened for opioid use in emergency and primary care sites and found that more patients screened positive in emergency care settings.  In emergency care, 5.9% of patients screened positive for opioid misuse.  In primary care, 0.8% screened positive.
